Latin American Extractivism: A Blot on Progressive Governments?

A whole school of thinking on Latin America adhered to by many scholars on the left focuses exclusively on extractivism or the dependence on the export of oil, minerals, agricultural products. In doing so it blames progressive governments for being as much responsible for dependence on foreign capital, and everything that goes with it, as conservative and right-wing governments. In the process they gloss over the gains under progressive governments (in, Bolivia under Evo Morales, Ecuador under Rafael Correa, Venezuela, Argentina, etc.) and lumps them in the same category as Bolsonaro’s Brazil, Uribe’s Colombia and the like. My edited “Latin American Extractivism: Dependency, Resource Nationalism and Resistance in Broad Perspective” attempts to refute that line of thinking. The following is a review of that book written by Angelo Rivero and posted by NACLA: Report on the Americas.
