THE ANNULMENT OF ROE V WADE: THE CHICKENS COME HOME TO ROOST
The undemocratic nature of
our democratic system shows its true colors. The United States is one of the
few countries in the world where Supreme Court judges and other judges are
life-long appointees.
Equally striking is the
following: The Republicans have won only 1 presidential election since 1992 by
popular vote (that of 2004) and yet they have 6 of 9 Supreme Court judges.
Consider the disproportionate weight of rural conservative states with small
African-American and Latinx populations in the presidential electoral college.
And then consider how Trump bragged about how he appointed a record number of
right-wing judges (including 3 Supreme Court judges) to the same right-wing
supporters who previously complained about the “activist judges” in our
judicial system. And consider how the approval of Trump’s last Supreme Court
appointment was rushed through congress engineered by the hypocritical Mitch
McConnell in 2020, the same Mitch McConnell who vetoed Obama’s appointee on
grounds that in one year (2016) the country would elect a new president who should
have the right to fill the vacancy. And the Democrats stood idly by. And
finally, consider how it’s the Senate that ratifies judicial appointments, the
same Senate in which California with a population of 39,512,000 has the same
weight as Wyoming with a population of 579,000 (84% of whom are white) and
compare that to Washington DC with 706,000 and no representation at all. In
case you don’t get my point, California’s population is over 68 times greater
than that of Wyoming with the same weight in the Senate!
